5 Lessons from Imran Khan & PTI Branding and Marketing Strategy

Last two events of PTIJALSA both in Lahore and Karachi presented a new, and for many an unexpected support to this relatively new political force in Pakistan. Tahreek-e-Insaf was formed in 1997 as a movement for justice. There were handful supporters who continued their loyalties for a party that did not have any backing from the masses.

So what changed public perception about the party and how did Imran Khan managed to raise its brand equity to a level that pulled out the most lethargic people to support his Jalsas in the two major cities of Pakistan.

Before we start analyzing it deeper, one must realize that the most powerful global brands are using entertainers and sportsmen in increasing their brand value. The reason is simple, people follow entertainers and sportsmen, and hence they are able to create massive market for the brand.

Lesson 1: Imran Khan realized this and combined the two, his value as sportsman and team captain together with entertainers such as Shahzad Roy, Abrarul Haq and the Salman Ahmed. This classic combination worked in the early days and started creating some vibes.

Lesson 2: PTI realized that the older generation in Pakistan has become somewhat rigid and youth is easily transformable because they are frustrated with the usual politics. He focused at youth as the segment that he wanted to market PTI brand to and youth is mostly attracted to music. A job well done by Shahzad, Abrar and Salman for early mobilization for youth power.

Lesson 3: Imran Khan used the success stories of Shukat Khanum Hospital and NAMAL College as tangible examples of successful projects initiated by him that are considered as most transparent and corruption free private sector initiatives. He used these two projects in projecting his leadership and team building capabilities.

Lesson 4: PTI clearly outran its competition through effective use of technology. Pakistan has around 22 million internet users of which 5.5 million are hooked at facebook and about 0.5 million are twitter users. Imran created a dedicated team of techies to capitalize on this massive opportunity. As result of this, PTI has over 200,000 fans on Facebook. Imran’s own page has over 300,000 fans and around 150,000 twitter followers. This helped PTI mobilizing massive crowd at both Jalsas. During the Karachi Jalsa, at onetime 98 tweets per second were being sent that helped in trending PTI, PTIJALSA and IK on global Twitter trends.

Lesson 5: PTI has been branded as a political force that will address the issues of corruption, nepotism, injustice and inequitable treatment to poor masses of Pakistan. This careful positioning of PTI brand has now established that the people of Pakistan can count of them as a true movement for justice.

Media support was cherry on the cake, and why don’t they support the Tsunami. PTI brand has become so powerful that it started attracting political giants from other parties. This is however also a caution point for Imran Khan and his team, they really need to carefully evaluate the individual for credibility before offering party membership. Any wrong decision at this stage will hurt the brand image!

Direct Mail, is that still a good promotional tool?

Remember those days when we used to wait for postman to deliver our mail? Things have changed; we now receive most of our bills, invoices and notices via email. Marketing and promotional material that used to flood our post box, now being sent to us in our spam box!

I recently conducted a random survey asking people about their preferences on receiving promotional material. Whereas most respondents expressed their preference to receive promotions via email, there was an alarming commonality, “It was easier to delete the email”.

Obviously when marketing and promotion is one of the major costs in any business, such a finding is scary. A major challenge for email marketing companies is to increase the “Open Rate”. There are various estimates and researches. But most experts agree that a 10-15% open rate is good. More important stuff is the action that the reader takes after reading the email. Logically speaking, a reader could delete, forward, respond or take no action.

I was reading a report done by Constant Contact (one of the top email marketing companies in the US) based on a survey done in Fall 2011 that shows that 81% small business prefer face-to-face contact with the potential customers. Hence the importance of human contact is undeniable, particularly in case of small businesses.

Major companies around the globe have now reduced their spending on print and broadcast mediums and budgets for internet based advertisements have increased significantly. Considering the human nature, stuff that we can feel with our hands leaves a lasting impact on our memory, is that the right move? Or significance of printed promotional material will remain intact?

Perhaps, while deploying a campaign, a vital question every brand manager needs to ask is the ratio and mix between broadcast, internet based and printed promotion tools.

In case of small businesses, Facebook is one of the most popular medium for promotion. Every corner shop in jumping on to the Facebook bandwagon, but in reality, this might not be the most effective tool. Its popularity is based on the ease of use, cheaper cost and large demography around the globe. In reality, not many businesses understand or have expertise in engaging potential customers on Facebook. Hence the results usually are not as desirable!

I wonder how many can still deny the fact that receiving a personalized letter has much bigger psychological value as compared to a digitally prepared mass marketing email?

Strike a balance is the message here!

Amir Khan Vs Lamont Peterson Rematch Set For May 19

LONDON: Amir Khan will fight Lamont Peterson on May 19 in Las Vegas after the Briton was granted his wish for a rematch after his controversial loss to the American last December, his promoter said on Thursday.
Khan lost his WBA super-lightweight and IBF light-welterweight belts in Lamont’s home city of Washington in December on a split decision having been docked two points by the referee for pushing.
His camp criticised the referee’s actions and were shocked by television replays showing a mystery man in a hat talking with a judge ringside, prompting the WBA to order a rematch.
The ‘mystery man’ was identified as Mustafa Ameen, who is an IBF volunteer helping cash-strapped boxers. He denied interfering with the judges’ scorecards. (Reuters)

Reopen Zardari case, get relief: SC to Gilani

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's supreme court on Thursday promised to drop contempt proceedings against PM Yousaf Raza Gilani if he reopens graft cases against president Asif Ali Zardari.

The court had earlier summoned Gilani to appear before it on February 13 for the formal framing of contempt charges for defying its orders on writing to the Swiss authorities about accounts that Zardari had allegedly used to launder about $12 million in bribes. The PM had a day earlier appealed against the order and asked the court to suspend it.

"The money in the Swiss banks belonged to the people of Pakistan. It will not come into our pockets. If the PM writes the letter to Swiss authorities, we will end contempt proceedings," said chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudary, who heads an eight-judge bench hearing the appeal against the SC's order to frame contempt charges.

The judges insisted that the PM should have taken the initiative in reopening those cases during Thursday's proceedings. They expressed their displeasure over certain parts in the draft of the appeal. It had said it would be ironic to send to prison a democratically elected PM who had released the detained judges.

"The country's PM should have high ethical standards and that the language of the appeal gave the impression that the premier wanted to influence the court's judgment,'' the court said.

Justice Chaudhry said the court had been patient for over two years since it ordered that the matter be taken up with the Swiss. "If the PM is refusing to write a letter, he should just dismiss all the judges and appoint his party's workers in their place. We cannot understand why the prime minister is so rigidly against writing the letter," Chaudhry asked. The prime minister should not be the person to undermine any institution.''

"Forget about the letter for a minute and tell me why PM's actions are equal to contempt,'' Gilani's counsel Aitzaz Ahsan asked the bench. "I will prove that the premier has not taken any illegal action and acted as per rules. My client should get the benefit of the doubt.''

Ahsan pointed out that the Swiss had closed the cases in 2008 when Zardari took office on the grounds of immunity and that there was no third party to claim the funds.
