Climate change to bring more floods: World Bank

HANOI: Climate change will bring more floods and extreme weather to Southeast Asia, a World Bank official said on Thursday on a visit to the region, where hundreds have died in severe inundation.
“What we are seeing is there are more floods, more extreme weather events, higher temperature, more variable rainfalls and we believe that is caused by the climate change.
And we should expect this to increase, sadly,” Andrew Steer, the World Bank’s special envoy for the climate change, told reporters in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi.
Thailand’s worst floods in half a century have killed 533 people and damaged the homes and livelihoods of millions around the country.
In the neighbouring Cambodia, the deadliest floods since 2000 have killed at least 247 people while more than 100 have died in Vietnam, mostly in the southern Mekong Delta.
Steer, who cancelled plans to visit Thailand on his regional tour because of the disaster, said the floods there were “consistent with what we know to be true about climate change.”
The United Nations says climate change, fuelled by hydrocarbon-based energy systems, is the world’s most pressing environmental issue.

Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi advanced to their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 doubles final on Saturday at the BNP Paribas Masters.
The seventh seeds defeated in-form third seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor 6-3, 7-6(7) in 89 minutes.

The duo have lifted two ATP World Tour titles at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle (d. Haase-Raonic) and the If Stockholm Open (d. Melo-Soares) this year. Nestor and Mirnyi dropped to a 42-19 season mark, which includes a 3-3 record in finals.
Bopanna and Qureshi will meet Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut in Sunday's final after the French wild cards broke serve three times from 12 opportunities to defeat Santiago Gonzalez and Christopher Kas 6-1, 7-6(3) in 80 minutes.
Benneteau and Mahut are through to their first ATP World Tour doubles final together since 2009 Lyon, where the duo won their second team title.

Bollywood actress Ashwarya's Pregnancy news hits the world

Aishwarya’s pregnancy is touching people in creepy ways. Whereas various are just glad with have a good time with the moment, nurses of the Seven Hills Hospital declared a strike, thinking that it’s a good time for this!
As Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan plan for their moment of joy, we discover someone else ‘cashing’ in on this moment too! Well, exactly. they say that the nurses at 7 Hills Hospital, where Aishwarya had spent for a check up previous night, have exposed to go on strike if their wants are not met. So, what precisely are these demands? It seems that the nurses were promised a 10 percent trek after joining, but in real term they were given a trek of only four percent. So, their demand from the administration is to fulfill their promise. Also this is not all, on November 9, 2011 the nurses went on a shutter down-strike, called the flash strike, now the management takes notice. While the officials of Eight Hills don’t really believes that the promise should be fulfilled, it looks like the nurses will probably keep theirs. Well, talk about mauke pe chauka! But we don’t blame the nurses, because in Mumbai & a bit of elegance does go a lengthy way! Anyway, we expect all this gets solved before Ashwarya goes into labor room. Also we wouldn’t want to see Ashwarya delivering her baby with the help of her husband Abhishek.

Aishwarya's baby, Sachin century, bookies and the media

MUMBAI: Though thousands of depressed fans saw West Indies spinner Bishoo send away Sachin Tendulkar, 24 runs short of his target, the bookies had a meadow day riding far above the ground on fan fury.

Yet, bookies are even more satisfied as the maestro's next end is Eden Gardens five days from now. And bets will stay crutch up till then. But, before that, Big B's yet-to-be born grandchild is probable to take centre stage. "Over Rs 150 crores is riding on whether Aishwarya Rai will bring the child on 11. 11. 11 or on Children's Day, the day the Eden Test match kicks off. This in spite of the fact that Abhishek Bachchan has made it clear that wife Aishwarya is not going for a Cesarean operation, said a bookie.

Police are keeping vigil on the gambling scene for the two super actions. "We are awake there is also serious betting on whether the actress will deliver a boy or girl. This is unlucky situation and shows how we are still fanatical with a boy child, said a police officer.

The master blaster, while, can obtain heart. While it's still five days to go, punters are already insertion odds on him achieving the deed at Kolkata. Sachin seems to be in wonderful form. It will be fine if he achieves his ton on his home ground, Mumbai, during the 3rd test.
The betting mafia is pushing in crores to forecast the sex of Aishwarya Rai's unborn child. The news doing the rounds is that bookies are trying to call the Aishwarya's doctor to know the sex of the unborn baby.

The maximum bets are coming in for 11. 11. 11 as all astrologers & numerologist are declaring it to be a very lucky day. There are sufficient bets sited for Children's Day too.

APP Exclusive: Who’s following you on Twitter or Facebook? Maybe CIA’s ‘vengeful librarians’

McLEAN, Va. — In an anonymous industrial park in Virginia, in an unassuming brick building, the CIA is following tweets — up to 5 million a day.
At the agency’s Open Source Center, a team known affectionately as the “vengeful librarians” also pores over Facebook, newspapers, TV news channels, local radio stations, Internet chat rooms — anything overseas that anyone can access and contribute to openly.

From Arabic to Mandarin Chinese, from an angry tweet to a thoughtful blog, the analysts gather the information, often in native tongue. They cross-reference it with the local newspaper or a clandestinely intercepted phone conversation. From there, they build a picture sought by the highest levels at the White House, giving a real-time peek, for example, at the mood of a region after the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden or perhaps a prediction of which Mideast nation seems ripe for revolt.
Yes, they saw the uprising in Egypt coming; they just didn’t know exactly when revolution might hit, said the center’s director, Doug Naquin.
The center already had “predicted that social media in places like Egypt could be a game-changer and a threat to the regime,” he said in a recent interview with The Associated Press at the center. CIA officials said it was the first such visit by a reporter the agency has ever granted.
The CIA facility was set up in response to a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission, with its first priority to focus on counterterrorism and counterproliferation. But its several hundred analysts — the actual number is classified — track a broad range, from Chinese Internet access to the mood on the street in Pakistan.
While most are based in Virginia, the analysts also are scattered throughout U.S. embassies worldwide to get a step closer to the pulse of their subjects.
The most successful analysts, Naquin said, are something like the heroine of the crime novel “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” a quirky, irreverent computer hacker who “knows how to find stuff other people don’t know exists.”
Those with a masters’ degree in library science and multiple languages, especially those who grew up speaking another language, “make a powerful open source officer,” Naquin said.
The center had started focusing on social media after watching the Twitter-sphere rock the Iranian regime during the Green Revolution of 2009, when thousands protested the results of the elections that put Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad back in power. “Farsi was the third largest presence in social media blogs at the time on the Web,” Naquin said.
The center’s analysis ends up in President Barack Obama’s daily intelligence briefing in one form or another, almost every day.
After bin Laden was killed in Pakistan in May, the CIA followed Twitter to give the White House a snapshot of world public opinion.
Since tweets can’t necessarily be pegged to a geographic location, the analysts broke down reaction by languages. The result: The majority of Urdu tweets, the language of Pakistan, and Chinese tweets, were negative. China is a close ally of Pakistan’s. Pakistani officials protested the raid as an affront to their nation’s sovereignty, a sore point that continues to complicate U.S.-Pakistani relations.

Coca-Cola’s ‘secret ingredient unveiled’

Washington: An American radio station has allegedly disclosed the formula for one of Coca-Cola’s key secret ingredients.

The Coca-Cola recipe has been a well-kept secret for years. Created by medicinal pharmacist John Pemberton in 1886, the exact measures of each ingredient that make up the world-famous soft drink have been closely guarded – until now.

American public radio show Thisamericanlife.org claims to have uncovered a list of ingredients and their exact quantities to mix the perfect Coca-Cola drink. A photo from the 8th February 1979 editorion of American daily newspaper, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, shows a person holding open a book with a recipe, which is allegedly an exact copy of Pemberton’s.

The recipe is said to contain the precise amount of all the different oils needed to create Merchandise 7X, Coca-Cola’s secret ingredient. Even though Merchandise 7X makes up only one percent of the drink’s formula, the key ingredient is believed to give one of the world’s most popular soft drink its unique taste.

The official recipe is allegedly guarded 24-hours a day in a vault in Atlanta, Georgia.

The unveiled recipe is:

Fluid extract of Coca 3 drams USP
Citric acid 3 oz
Caffeine 1oz
Sugar 30 (it is unclear from the markings what quantity is required)
Water 2.5 gal
Lime juice 2 pints 1 qrt
Vanilla 1oz
Caramel 1.5oz or more to colour
7X flavour (use 2oz of flavour to 5 gals syrup):
Alcohol 8oz
Orange oil 20 drops
Lemon oil 30 drops
Nutmeg oil 10 drops
Coriander 5 drops
Neroli 10 drops
Cinnamon 10 drops

Fort of Peace Karachi

HOLY QURAN: 6:123 - And thus We have placed within every city the greatest of its criminals to conspire therein. But they conspire not except against themselves, and they perceive [it] not.

The escalating volatile situation in Karachi has exposed the law enforcing agencies’ lack of expertise in controlling crime and terrorism. At the same time, the failure of the politicians to evolve a workable solution has also showed their lack of will and command in persuading the warring factions to come to terms. Moreover, the protagonists in Karachi’s own “War of Terror” have exhibited no desire to encourage a truce among them nor have they displayed any serious and sincere remorse in the multitude of deaths and injuries.

Daikho Gay To Mil Jayen Gi Har Mor Pe Laashain
Dhoondo Gay To Is Shehr Mein Qatil Na Milay Ga

In the mayhem and anarchic condition of Karachi, the brunt of all these have been borne by the innocent 20 million denizens who have no say whatsoever in this whole sordid affair. The dead victims of this mindless war have been transformed from faces and names to just numbers. The media just highlights the number of killed and, except for the victims’ families and friends, no one knows who these victims really are. For everyone else, they are just numbers. Period.

However, the real stakeholders of Karachi cannot claim genuine concern if they show apathy or complacency. In fact, Karachi’s stakeholders are not just residents of Karachi or those who venture into the city looking for employment or earning opportunities. The stakeholders of Karachi are 180 million people known as Pakistanis living in this country or for that matter those who are the Pakistani Diaspora.

The Karachi Wars have become an albatross around the neck of the business community since this explosive and dangerous situation has compelled foreign buyers to revisit their business relationship with Pakistani businessmen. The hardhearted intransigence of political parties (including ethnic and religious oriented) has outshone whatever flicker of hope the businessmen had that better sense will prevail.

The reason for the businessmen’s frustration and exasperation is that it is Karachi that is the prime contributor to the nation’s Treasury and is the major source of meaningful employment. Karachi is also a two-port city as well as having the most literate population among all cities of Pakistan. Moreover, Pakistan is known because of Karachi and thus, net-net, Pakistan suffers if Karachi breaks down.

Thus the time has come for Karachi’s businessmen, spearheaded by Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to initiate a campaign for peace. When the going was tough in Karachi many years ago, KCCI organized the My Karachi --- an oasis of harmony Exhibition that has now become an iconic annual event. It is time to initiate another such campaign that should be called Our Karachi --- citadel of peace.

The salient features of the campaign would be:

1. Letter campaign. Millions of letters (someone should draft in English and Urdu) addressed to COAS General Pervez Ashfaque Kayani and Chief Justice Supreme Court Justice Iftikhar Chaudary.

2. SMS campaign. Millions of sms to one another, to ministers, to judges, to media, to uniformed people, and to politicians.

3. Diaspora campaign: Pakistanis living in alien lands be encouraged to join the campaign and also bombard Pakistani embassies, high commissions, and honorary consulates with emails and letters.

4. Disclosure campaign: Difficult but doable. People should come forward and relate to a central hotline, thru sms, emails, and letters, how much and to whom they paid graft.

5. Media campaign: Concerned citizens, chambers, associations, and NGOs must issue advertisements appealing for sanity and stability.

6. Neighborhood campaign: Social activist residents must organize corner meetings and get-togethers where residents would assemble and formulate concerns and consequences.

More importantly, instead of inviting Interior Minister Rehman Malik every week, KCCI should organize an All-Parties Conference and come heavy on the hierarchies of these parties that if they do not bring about peace and harmony in Karachi, these politicians might as well let non-democratic forces, with full support and cooperation of the business community, take over command for a real long time.
